Grand Junction photographer

Portraits, couples and elopements around Colorado National Monument and the Colorado River, from a photographer who drives west for the right shoot.

Grand Junction has Colorado National Monument, a 23-mile rim drive through canyon country.

Getting there

Six hours west, and worth the drive.

That's far enough that I plan it as a trip.

Where we would shoot

Three places to know, and the rules that go with them.

  • Colorado National Monument

    National Park Service

A 23-mile Rim Rock Drive winds up switchbacks onto the mesa tops and then along the canyon walls before descending back into the valley.

Photo rules here: The Park Service requires a permit for all weddings, with a $150 non-refundable administrative fee and a four-hour limit at most ceremony locations. It lists standard requests as taking about ten business days. The page says nothing about hired photographers.

  • Colorado River State Park

    Colorado Parks and Wildlife

819 acres with 13 miles of trails and 35 miles of river. It gives you water and trees in a place that's mostly desert.

Photo rules here: The park charges a daily vehicle pass of $10 to $15. No photography rule is listed on the official page.

  • Grand Mesa

    U.S. Forest Service

The mesa rises above the valley. I treat it as its own trip, because its weather is not the same as the canyons below.

Photo rules here: The official page lists no photography rule that I could find.

Place rules last checked November 5, 2026. I check them again before we book.

Questions

Fair questions about Grand Junction.

Can we elope in Colorado National Monument?

Yes, with a permit. The Park Service requires one for every wedding. Start with the permit and then pick the date.

Is Grand Junction an alternative to Moab?

Often. Both have red rock. Colorado National Monument publishes a ceremony fee and a time limit, which helps you decide. Choose by permits and season.

What's the Monument's rim drive like for a shoot?

The Park Service describes it as climbing switchbacks onto the mesa tops and running along the canyon walls. It's a good place to look for a spot before we settle on one.
