St. George, Utah
St. George, Utah photographer
Portraits, couples and elopements in southwest Utah's red rock, from a photographer who drives out for the right shoot.

St. George is a winter and spring town for photographers. The July average high is 102°F, and nobody looks good doing that.
Getting there
Twelve hours by road, so I plan this one carefully.
That's a real trip, so I treat it as a planned destination shoot instead of a day out.
Where we would shoot
Where I'd shoot, and one rule you need to hear first.
Snow Canyon State Park
Utah State Parks
Lava flows and sandstone cliffs in one park. It's the obvious pick for red rock photos near St. George.
Photo rules here: Utah State Parks' photography guidelines require a hired photographer to hold an annual professional pass. It costs $225 for up to five shoots or $400 for up to ten, and it's bought at least five days ahead. Each shoot must be scheduled by email five days in advance, and one-time permits are not issued for portrait sessions.

The park describes turquoise reservoir water and the red sands of Sand Mountain.
Photo rules here: The official page lists no photography rule that I could find. Other Utah state parks, like Snow Canyon, require a professional pass.

Light
Plan around the heat, then the sun.
I'd plan sessions between October and April. In summer I'd start before sunrise.
Winter evenings arrive early and the table shows it. By December the sun is down shortly after 5 p.m. Mountain Time, which means a short, sharp window of golden light.
